Il gioco funziona al meglio quando il clima si fa più festoso, come tra i cori di "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)", già pronti per animare i concerti del prossimo tour, o sui fiati in perfetto stile Stax di "Any Other Way". Riesce meno, invece, quando le inflessioni si fanno più sentimentali, da "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" a "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted". Ma la maggior parte delle tracce di "Only The Strong Survive" scorre con leggerezza, tra i luminosi accenti doo-wop del Ben E. King di "Don't Play That Song" e l'andamento flessuoso del Tyrone Davis di "Turn Back The Hands Of Time".Di una cosa, però, Springsteen si mostra convinto dall'inizio alla fine: di avere fatto sua la lezione di non mollare mai. "Non riesco a immaginarmi in pensione", ha confessato al leggendario conduttore radiofonico Howard Stern. E così, a oltre settant'anni, eccolo pronto per imbarcarsi in un nuovo giro del mondo, che lo porterà anche in Italia la prossima estate. Con lo stesso spirito indomito (e con lo stesso sprezzo della retorica...) della canzone che ha scelto come titolo: "There's gonna be a whole lot of trouble in your life/ So listen to me, get up off your knees 'cause only the strong survive".
